Pharmacology:

Metoprolol, a competitive, beta1-selective (cardioselective) adrenergicantagonist, is similar to atenolol in its moderate lipid solubility, lack ofintrinsic sympathomimetic activity (ISA), and weak membrane stabilizingactivity (MSA).

Metoprolol competes with adrenergicneurotransmitters such as catecholamines for binding at beta(1)-adrenergicreceptors in the heart. Beta (1)-receptor blockade results in a decrease inheart rate, cardiac output, and blood pressure.

Indications:

For the managementof acute myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, heart failure and mild tomoderate hypertension. May be used to treat supraventricular andtachyarrhythmias and as prophylaxis for migraine headaches.
